FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes you different?

I won't just tell you what to do.

I'll explain why.

Because when you understand what's happening, you can make confident decisions for your baby long after our appointment has finished.

What is an IBCLC?

An IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) is the highest internationally recognised qualification in infant feeding. Think of us as the feeding detectives - we look at the whole picture to understand why feeding isn't working as expected, not just what to do next.

Do i only help with breastfeeding?

Absolutely not.

I support families who breastfeed, chestfeed, combination feed, express, use donor milk, formula feed, or any combination of the above. My role is to help feeding work for your family.

When is the best time to book?

Any time.

You can see me before your baby arrives to prepare for feeding, in the early days after birth, months later when something changes, or even when you're returning to work or introducing bottles.

It's never "too late" to ask for support.

What happens during an appointment?

We start by talking.

I'll ask about your pregnancy, birth, medical history, feeding goals and what's been happening so far. Then we'll observe a feed (where appropriate), assess what's going on and work together to create a realistic plan that suits your family.

There are no ticking clocks and no conveyor-belt advice

Can you help if I'm formula feeding?

Yes!

Responsive bottle feeding, choosing equipment, feeding quantities, combination feeding, pacing, feeding behaviours... these are all things I support families with.

Can my partner come too?

Please do!

Partners often leave appointments saying, "I finally understand what's going on." Feeding is much easier when everyone feels informed and confident.

Do you assess for tongue-tie?

Yes.

If feeding concerns suggest tongue function may be contributing, I'll carry out a thorough oral assessment and explain what I'm seeing. If tongue-tie is suspected, we'll discuss your options and next steps together.
